Couples Swept Away vs Couples Negril: Same Town, Two Different Trips

Every week somebody asks me some version of this question. Two Couples Resorts, both in Negril, both adults-only, both all-inclusive, both wearing the same logo. Which one is better?

Neither. They're built for two different couples, and the fastest way to have the wrong trip in Jamaica is to pick the one built for somebody else.

I'm Beverly Schulte, a Certified Travel Associate and certified Couples advisor. I've walked Seven Mile Beach myself, and I've studied this brand from the inside. Here's the comparison I walk my clients through, including the details the resort websites won't spell out for you.

Start With the Beach, Because They're Not the Same Beach

This is the detail most couples miss entirely. Couples Swept Away sits on Seven Mile Beach proper, the long famous stretch. Couples Negril sits on Bloody Bay, a calm, protected cove just north of it. Same town. Different water.

Seven Mile is a strolling beach. You can walk for an hour in either direction, past beach bars, live reggae some nights, and a steady stream of vendors and foot traffic. Some couples find that energy the entire point of Negril. Others find it exhausting by day two.

Bloody Bay is a swimming beach. The cove keeps the water calm and clear, the crowd thins out, and the loudest thing most afternoons is the water itself. You give up the walkability. You get the quiet.

So the first question isn't which resort. It's this one. Do you want to walk your beach or float in it?

What Swept Away Is Actually For

Couples Swept Away is the largest resort in the Couples family, 312 suites, six restaurants, eight bars, three pools. Its signature is a ten-acre sports complex across the road with a 25-meter lap pool, squash and racquetball courts, and tennis on both hard and clay. The Oasis Spa lives inside that complex too, which tells you something about the property's personality. Even the pampering sits next to the sport.

This is the resort for couples who relax by doing. Morning laps, afternoon tennis, a walk down Seven Mile to Margaritaville before dinner. It's also the pick if being able to leave the resort on foot matters to you, because the beach bars and shops of Long Bay are right outside.

The honest tradeoffs. The property is spread out, the beach in front carries real foot traffic and vendors, and the swim-up bar is the smaller of the two resorts'.

What Couples Negril Is Actually For

Couples Negril is the intimate one, 234 rooms, five restaurants, five bars, two pools, and one of the largest swim-up pool bars in the brand. The spa sits in a treehouse-style setting rather than a fitness complex, which tells you this property's personality too. Here, the pampering is the sport.

This is the resort for couples who relax by stopping. Calm bay water you can float in for an hour, a quieter crowd, staff who learn your name by the second morning. It also has a small, discreet au naturel area, which Swept Away doesn't offer, so if that's on your list, the decision is already made.

The honest tradeoffs. There's nowhere much to walk to, and if you like leaving the resort on foot, you'll feel the difference. The energy is low by design. Couples looking for a livelier scene sometimes find it too quiet.

The Question That Settles It

When a couple can't decide, I ask one question. On your best vacation day ever, did you do things, or did you do nothing?

Doers belong at Swept Away. Floaters belong at Couples Negril. Couples who are one of each usually belong at Swept Away, because the doer will go crazy at Bloody Bay before the floater gets restless on Seven Mile, and the floater can always find a quiet corner at a big resort.

If Jamaica in the fall is on your mind, I wrote about why November beats July on Seven Mile Beach. The timing case applies to both properties.

Questions I get asked

Neither is better. They're built for different couples. Swept Away is the larger, more active resort on walkable Seven Mile Beach with a ten-acre sports complex. Couples Negril is smaller and quieter on calm Bloody Bay. Active couples fit Swept Away. Couples who want stillness fit Couples Negril.

Not exactly. Couples Negril sits on Bloody Bay, a calm protected cove just north of the main Seven Mile stretch. The water is calmer and clearer for swimming, but you can't stroll to Negril's beach bars from it. Couples Swept Away is the one on Seven Mile Beach proper.

It depends on how you use a beach. Seven Mile at Swept Away is the better walking beach, long and lively with bars and vendors along the way. Bloody Bay at Couples Negril is the better swimming beach, calm, clear, and quiet. Walkers pick Swept Away. Swimmers and floaters pick Couples Negril.
